What do you do when your favorite piece of jewelry has tarnished? Don't reach for that toothpaste and toothbrush! This can scratch your stones and is not a good method for cleaning anything except your teeth!
In the finishing steps of the jewelry I make, I apply a patina to darken and show the textures of the piece. Over time, this patina will change and darken and each piece will develop it’s own one-of-a-kind colour. These finishes may change and mellow over time, much as silver flatware will develop it’s own patina.
I don't recommend commercial silver cleaners or a homemade paste of baking soda and water as these methods may damage the gemstones and will remove any intentional patina that was added.
I recommend that you use a polishing cloth or a soft cloth and just rub the surfaces to retain luster. Water and a soft toothbrush may be used to clean the gemstones if there is any accumulation of dirt.
The best way to keep your favorite piece of jewelry tarnish free? WEAR IT! :)
